This is the story of the Albert Einstein Archives as part of the Hebrew University’s Library Authority. While all academic libraries have similar procedures, participate in common catalogs and have a typical common clientele, the archives has its own unique procedures, needs, tasks and databases. Historical Background AEA – The Albert Einstein Archives The Archives originated in the collection of the papers Einstein bequeathed to the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Upon his death in 1955, his secretary Helen Dukas and his friend Otto Nathan began the task of augmenting and organizing the material. Historical Background AEA – The Albert Einstein Archives In 1982 the collection became part of the Manuscript and Archives Department of the Jewish National and University Library. Nevertheless, this setup improved the working conditions of the AEA greatly. Historical Background The Library Authority The Hebrew University did not have a central governing body for its libraries since its inception in 1925. Academic libraries were considered attachments to the different departments and faculties. Historical Background The Library Authority In the late 1990’s efforts were underway to create such an umbrella to unite and streamline several of the University’s academic libraries under one roof. Historical Background The Library Authority The Hebrew University’s Library Authority was established in 2003 to provide an academic, professional and administrative framework for the institution’s libraries. Presently it consists of eight libraries. The AEA became part of the Library Authority in 2008. Where we differ The AEA serves its users who are not from the university but reside abroad through email contact. The AEA is not inherently part of the University but as a result of the terms of Einstein’s last will and testament. It plays no direct role in the student’s curriculum. The AEA is fulfilling a historic function in preserving Einstein’s papers. Where we differ The AEA generates income. The AEA grants copyrights to authors and publishers. The AEA coordinates requests for commercial rights. Common ground We are part of the Library Authority and are managed by it. We are part of the Hebrew University. We are part of the momentous technological changes in our field. We are similar but different. The variety of tasks occasionally overlap, mostly not. Each has its area of special expertise. We can learn from each other. Future developments may well lead to closer cooperation and integration between archives and libraries.
