Habitats and Niches Ecosystems
2
Create a 2 Flap Foldable You will fold a piece of paper in half hamburger style and lift the flap cut in half Label one side Habitat and the other side niche write the important information inside Habitat Niche
3
Habitat A place where an organism lives Must provide food, water, shelter and other things it needs to live, grow, and reproduce from its environment. Different types of organisms usually live in different habitats There are many types of habitats
4
Habitat They can be large or small One area may contain many habitats –Ex. Forest Mushrooms grow in the damp soil Salamanders live on the forrest floor Woodpeckers build nest in tree trunks
5
Habitat Organisms live in different habitats because they have different requirements for survival. –Ex. Polar Bear lives in the arctic and use the ice platforms to hunt for seals and fish. It could not survive in the tropical rain forest.

B. Niche — the ecological niche involves both the place where an organism lives and the roles that an organism has in its habitat. Example: The ecological niche of a sunflower growing in the backyard includes absorbing light, water and nutrients (for photosynthesis), providing shelter and food for other organisms (e.g. bees, ants, etc.), and giving off oxygen into the atmosphere.
13
Niche The role of an organism Includes everything an organism does and needs.
14
Niche Different organisms can share the same habitat but they cannot have the same niche. Two populations cannot have the same niche for long. Niches can change so that the population will survive(adaptation)
15
Niche
16
The ecological niche of an organism depends not only on where it lives andwhat it does. By analogy, it may be said that the habitat is the organism ’ s “ address ”, and the niche is its “ profession ”, biologically speaking. Worm ’ s Niche “ Address ”— Soil, Ground, etc. “ Profession ”– Mix-up soil
