Health and Care – Get In to Lincolnshire A project to promote employment opportunities in the NHS and the wider health and care sector in Lincolnshire by facilitating and encouraging partnerships between educators and employers

What is it about ? The specific aims of the project are to: To establish formal mechanisms for schools and training providers to work with Health and Social care sector employers to promote career opportunities in the sector. To inform the advice services of opportunities in the Health and Social Care sector to ensure that their service delivery promotes careers in the sector in Lincolnshire To ensure that the Health and Social care sector provides high quality work experience

Some Context Strengthening employer engagement activity between schools and healthcare providers Health Education England has recently published its Widening Participation and Talent for Care strategies. A common feature between these strategies is the recognition of the need for effective partnerships with schools, colleges and other education providers in promoting careers and employment opportunities within the NHS and wider health sector. As part of a programme of work to support the implementation of both the Talent for Care and Widening Participation programmes, proposals were invited which seek to test and demonstrate the benefits of school-NHS employer partnership working in raising aspirations and supporting the development of the future healthcare workforce.

… and some history and linkage The Greater Lincolnshire Improving Care project is about to conclude: Their Aims were: Improve the image and perception of the Health and Social Care sector Raise the awareness of career opportunities and pathways Actively work with managers and their workforce; sharing best practice, helping to improve the delivery of care, offering networking events and methods of support Highlight available resources to help with recruitment and retention of staff and with promoting careers in our sector The project was delivered by Boston College and funded by ESF (see insert in delegate pack)

… more history and linkage The Greater Lincolnshire Improving Care project achieved the following outcomes: Over 60 Registered Managers regularly attending networking meetings across Greater Lincolnshire Increased awareness of the importance of good recruitment practices 80+ Careers advisers with enhanced understanding of sector Social media presence to improve sharing of best practice Closer links between training providers and sector Bespoke training designed by employers for employers – reaching over 300 staff in 3 months Higher profile for the sector within the LEP Greater awareness of the challenges facing the sector through demographic changes and the integration of health and care

Establish formal mechanisms for schools and training providers to work with Health and Social care sector employers Following this launch event a working group will be established to Group to ensure that current information relating to job and career opportunities in the Health and Social Care Sector is available to all partners and that the group also play a lead role in facilitating work placements for school pupils. The group will also play a lead role in supporting and advising well qualified young people who perceive there to be a lack of opportunities in Lincolnshire. The working group will meet three times in the lifetime of the project and will meet quarterly thereafter. The working group membership will be drawn from representatives from (i) Healthcare Employer Organisations; (ii) Secondary Schools; (iii) post-16 training providers and (iv) providers of careers advice. The working group will report to the established Healthcare ‘Widening Participation Strategy Group’ that is facilitated by HEEM.

To inform the advice services of opportunities in the Health and Social Care sector to ensure that their service delivery promotes careers in the sector This project will develop new resources and evaluate current resources to make available to the providers of careers advice to ensure that their service delivery actively promotes careers in the healthcare sector in Lincolnshire. Yvonne is working on this aspect of the project More on this during her presentation this afternoon ! ….. and Yvonne will be taking more feedback in a focus group meeting to be staged soon. Eight professionals signed up to attend this meeting already – to get involved see Yvonne at lunchtime !

To ensure that the Health and Social care sector provides high quality work experience A specific aim of the project is to ensure that the number of work experience placements in health and care settings in Lincolnshire are doubled during session 2015-16 To do this we are considering various models of delivery (see the ‘Nottinghamshire Experience’ input that follows this presentation) Early feedback from schools indicates that they would welcome a ‘one-stop-shop’ solution for NHS work placements
