a huge industrial area of Western Germany containing many of the Germanys main industries The RUHR is a huge industrial area of Western Germany containing many of the Germanys main industries including factories and steel works. Germany relies on this region for its economy to work well.

The Ruhr invasion would lead to a chain of events in 1923 which would lead to disaster… and some would argue eventually to Hitler. We have to know these events well and be able to explain them Use pgs 14&15 of your text book to fill in your storyboard

badly weakened Population, Land & Industry Germany’s economy was badly weakened by the Treaty of Versailles. It had lost a large amount of its Population, Land & Industry and was expected to pay huge REPARATIONS.

1923 COULD NOT pay REPARATIONS In January 1923 the German Government claimed they COULD NOT pay their REPARATIONS FRENCH and BELGIANS The FRENCH and BELGIANS did not believe the Germans. INVADED THE RUHR They INVADED THE RUHR and took ‘goods’ to pay what was owed.

NOT The German Government ordered its citizens NOT to cooperate with the French ’ PASSIVE RESISTANCE’ This was known as – ’ PASSIVE RESISTANCE’

The French were tough with the strikers. 100 were killed and Over 100 were killed and 150,000 thrown out of their homes

The more money the Government printed the more prices rose!

TWICE a day Workers were soon being paid TWICE a day. They carried their money around in wheelbarrows!

The democratic Weimar Republic lost a lot of support. pensioners Middle class pensions and savingsMany pensioners and Middle class people had lost pensions and savings
