社團幹部未來的競爭力 鄭匡佑 成功大學學務處課指組組長

Do I need to join a club?  What is your definition of being successful?  Audacity to dream; ability to take actions to make dreams come true; self- adjustment for goal reaching or serendipity; creation of value for other people in the process.  Can we learn to do these in class?

Do I need to join a club?  The 80/20 principle.  Multi-discipline in the modern world.  More and more principle.  They say you can’t do it because they can’t do it. You are NOT they!

How to choose a club?  Start as early as possible!  What is your goal?  Learn something specific (English, music, sports, …).  Build connections (intercollegiate and international organizations).  Experience service learning (locally and internationally).  Purely for fun.

How to choose a club?  How much time you need to spend?  Is the club well-organized?  Bond with alumni.  Chances of being a leader.  Is there a role model?  Can I quickly “fit in”?  Out of your comfort zone!  How many clubs? For how many years?

Related researches  About 35% human resource managers think (2005, Cheers Magazine, Taiwan)  Positive correlation with future salary (Walters & Bray, 1963) and employ opportunities (Nemanick & Clark, 2002)  Performance at work is related to club leader experiences (Gandy et al., 1994).  High percentage of club leader experiences in CEO’s (Boone et al., 1988).

Tips for interviews  Relation between your interested job and club experiences.  Your achievements (with detailed numbers) as a leader/officer.  Success and failure experiences. (The latter is even more important.)  Establishing clubs > club leaders > club members.  Bad grades or unpopular departments: club experience or enterprise competitions is a must!  Sports teams: Japanese enterprise favorite  Business school graduates must have club experiences

 Elements of achieving success: MORAL  Methods (techniques), observation (or opportunities), resources, attitude (focus and positive thinking), and luck.  Attitude and methods can be learned!  A powerful attitude to start with: There is always a way!

 Know your outcome. (Can pilots fly airplanes without knowing the destination? How to choose your goal?)  Get yourself to take actions by deciding to do so.  Notice what you are getting from your actions.  If what you are doing is not working, change your approach. (For how long would you try to let a baby learn how to walk? How come adults forget how we learned to walk and stop trying after 1 or 2 failures?) The Ultimate Success Formula:

Thank you for your attention!
