2 WRA Programs Program purpose: To help ensure employers, employees, physicians and other health care professionals are aware of the risks of work-related asthma and take action to diagnose, treat, and prevent the occurrence of and/ or reduce the seriousness of work-related asthma

3 WRA Programs WRA initiatives - WRA Provider Education Program - WRA Education resources for Employers/Employees - WRA Surveillance (T.To).

4 Key Partners MOHLTC Ministry of Labour Workplace Safety and Prevention Services (WSPS) an amalgamation of FSA, IAPA, OSSA Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers Inc. (OHCOW) WSIB

5 Work related asthma Provider education project Workshops for health care providers (physicians, nurses) -Research (needs assessment) -E-learning Industry project -pamphlets -Continuing education (conferences, workshops) -Evaluation of resources Prior activities and organization

6 Background - WRA PEP MOL – had led WRA PEP Developed WRA modules for CME, workshops, dissemination, education, evaluation McMaster led this initiative with Dr Ted Haines Worked with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs – education for rural physicians

7 Background – WRA - Industry Led by MOL – Resources for Employers/Employees Identification of workers at risk Development of educational materials Dissemination, education and advocacy Also in collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs

8 WRA – Industry (continued) WRA – Education Resources for Employees and Employers Initially led by IAPA (now part of WSPS), in collaboration with OHCOW Developed booklets, brochures, for a variety of sectors (bakeries, auto, cleaners…) Presentations (workplaces, conferences)

10 Programs transitioned to OLA in September 2010 Dissemination of the new fact sheet and booklets on cleaning product – to 30 sites Educational material for Hairdressers and Nail Salons sectors in development New Program Committee was developed and held an inaugural meeting – January 17 th, 2011 E - Learning module for WRA PEP in development with Discovery Campus – application for Mainpro 1 credits WRA Update

11 Objectives going forward Educate –Improve recognition, diagnosis and management Evaluate –Determine effectiveness of interventions Collaborate –Work with partners across APA –Identify key WRA resources throughout the province

12 Key issues Education –Workshops: conferences (FMF, OCFP, OEMAC, Union H&S conferences), regional as per previous –CME module –on-line CME module: establish dissemination, accreditation –publications: Self-learning module for family physicians Anticipated audience 1.Health care providers: primary care physicians, specialists, students, occupational health nurses, AE, RT 2.Workplaces: unions, employers, occupational health nurses, Ministry of Labour 3.workers

13 Key issues Effectiveness –Develop element of evaluation throughout: measure of quantity (# of interactions) and quality (survey of effectiveness) –Needs assessment Collaboration –Work with other groups across APA –Identify WRA resources in province: MOL, interested specialists, specialty clinics, WSIB
