What is social networking? The good… Research suggests that, “…the educational and psychosocial benefits of this type of communication far outweigh the potential dangers” (Tynes, p. 575, 2009) Including – Perspective-taking skills necessary for 21 st century citizens – Cognitive skills required in education

How can we keep safe? Site blocking filters: CyberPatrol, NetNanny, IPrism Locate computer in central location in home Teach safety and self-regulation – Maintain open and honest dialogue – Teach them how to protect online privacy – Develop an exit strategy Join a site, learn to use it, partner with your child
