Technology Reading was becoming more prevalent which lead to the invention of the web-perfecting press which printed on both sides of the paper and was folded to mock as if print was on both sides. Cheap and efficient In the early 20 th century the first plane was invented by Orville and Wilbur Wright. Before the 1880s photography was only a professional activity. Photography before George Eastman photographers had to develop there shots immediately. This lead to the invention in 1888 of the Kodak camera.

The growth of cities Cities because of industrialization were booming extremely fast. Cities needed a place for the people to stay which lead to skyscrapers/ the upward expansion of buildings. Chicago went from 30,000 people in 1850 to 300,000 in 1870.

Transportation Before the Civil War, horse drawn carriages were mostly used. 1870-1880 underground cables powered street line cars 1888 Virginia became the first city to electrify transits A little later they had planes

Engineering With the engineering of steel, big structures were easier to build. Brooklyn Bridge was a steel cable suspension bridge. Greensward (Central Park) had boating, tennis facilities and bike paths. New designs of buildings.

Recreational Activities Amusement parks started as small playgrounds and then had a variety of rides. Biking became more popular with the invention of air filled tires. Boxing and baseball were popular sports to watch. People listened to sporting events.

Sports Baseball was the most popular to watch and play. They weren’t only entertaining, they were profitable. Tennis originated in North Wales in 1873.

Fine Arts By 1900 there was an art gallery in every big city. In the early 20 th century the Ashcan School of American art was created. Abstract art was brought by Europeans. By 1900 there were thousands of libraries.

Ways to Sell Goods Instead of buying from merchants, they bought from department and chain stores. Advertising boomed during the early 19 th century. Ward developed the catalog which as a page but turned into a booklet. By 1910 about 10 million Americans shopped by mail. In 1896 the post office introduced a rural free delivery (RFD) system that brought packages to your home.

Late 1800s and early 1900s was a very important time for the growth of America. Many things were created are useful to us today.
