The Neolithic Revolution

Need for a Change Change in climate & rising temperatures – Led man to discover farming – Seeds scattered from previous gathering seasons produced plants. Population growth – Hunter-gatherers felt the pressure to find new food sources – Farming helped to provide a steady source of food.

Neolithic Era Lasted between 8,000 and 4,000 BCE. Era begins with the development farming Developed improved stone tools. – Polished edges as opposed to chipped.

Agricultural Revolution Slash and burn agriculture was the earliest form of farming: – Fields were cleared of trees and burned before they were planted. Improved tools and techniques helped societies increase the amount of crops it could grow: —Development of plows to till soil. —Irrigation ditches were dug to bring water to the fields from other sources.

Domestication of Animals Domestication (taming) of goats, sheep, pigs, and cattle began during the Neolithic Era. –D–Domesticated animals played a major role in feeding people by providing: oMoMeat oMoMilk –I–Increased contact with animals led to the development of the most deadly diseases - smallpox, tuberculosis, malaria, plague, measles, cholera. o Fertilizer o Farm Labor (pulled plows)

Neolithic Improvements – Improved stone tools allowed people to work faster and more effectively. People started weaving cloth to make clothing rather then only using animal skins. Shelters were constructed using mud and wood.

PROGRESS OF MAN PART I & II

The Big Revolution Agriculture and domestication of animals makes civilization possible: – People begin to settle into communities based around arable (good) farmland. Provided a consistent source of food and other resources. – People create permanent settlements - villages, towns, and cities.

PROGRESS OF MAN PART III

Five Shared Characteristics of Civilization 1) Urbanization – Rise of cities and trade centers 2) Economic institutions – Specialization of Labor With food surpluses, not everyone had to be involved in food production. People became artisans, merchants, officials, soldiers, priests, etc. 3) Political Systems – Increase population= need for government to keep order – Religiously influenced 4) Culture and Ideas – Religion – Record Keeping – Written language 5) Advanced Technology – Bronze and Iron Age – Agriculture driven

Technology Driven Advancement Copper and Bronze Age 4,000-1,000 BCE – Artisans discovered they could create bronze when they combined copper and tin. – Tools and weapons made out of metal instead of stone.

Technology Driven Advancement Iron Age started around 1,000 BCE – Written records were kept starting in this era - marks the end of prehistory and the start of history. History!!!
