3.2 Units of Measurement Do Now: Based off prior knowledge of math, convert the following: 6 meters to centimeters 0.008 milliliters to deciliters 1300 kilogram to grams
2
Units of Measurement From last lesson, measurement consist of both a number and a unit Units are important to communicate a specific measurement to someone 28° – With no units, 28 degrees can either be really warm ( C ) or really cold ( F )
3
International System of Units (SI) Metric system, based of 10 so it is easy to convert Most countries goes by the metric system (like a universal language)

7
Other units terms Liters- volume of a cube that is 10cm all around (used for liquids) Weight- force that measures pull on a given mass by gravity (mass x gravity) Temperature- measure of how hot or cold something is
8
Temperature Kelvin- SI unit for temperature – Freezing Point of water is 273.15 K Celsius- also used in metrics – Freezing Point of water is 0°C Absolute zero- 0K or -273.15°C – This is where all matter stops moving
9
Converting Celsius to Kelvin – Add 273.15 Kelvin to Celsius – Subtract 273.15
10
Try These Out Convert 28.7 °C to Kelvin Convert 118°C to kelvin Convert 137K to °C

Density mass volume
12
Example Problems The mass of a copper penny is 3.1g. The volume is 0.35cm 3. What is the density of copper? The density of mercury is 13.6g/cm 3. If the mass of the sample of mercury is 2.50g, what is the volume of mercury?
