Respiration System Vocabulary: 1.celluar respiration 2.respiratory system 3.lung 4.alveoli 5.trachea 6.bronchi 7.diaphragm

Getting Oxygen Breathing involves taking air into the body and releasing air into the environment. The air you breathe in provides oxygen for your cells. Cellular respiration is the process in which cells use oxygen to release energy from food (glucose). Your body uses this energy for all life processes.

The Respiratory System Purpose: –The respiratory system is the system that takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. –It works closely with the circulatory system. –To get oxygen to the cells and remove the carbon dioxide.

The Organs of the Respiratory System Includes: –T–The Trachea –T–The Bronchi –T–The Lungs –T–The Diaphragm

The Lungs The lungs are the main organ of the respiratory system. The lungs are elastic, sponge-like organs in the chest. Lungs are made up of tiny (grape-like) air sacs called alveoli. –The alveoli are very thin and are surrounded by blood vessels. –Oxygen enters the blood through the thin walls of the alveoli.

Air enters the body through the mouth and nose!!!

More Respiratory Organs Trachea- From the mouth and nose the air moves into the trachea or windpipe. Bronchi - The trachea branches into 2 tubes called bronchi which enters the lungs.

The bronchi divide into smaller and smaller tubes that end in the alveoli.

More Organs continued… Muscles in the chest area move air into and out of the lungs. When you breath in or inhale, the diaphragm, a muscle just below your lungs, contracts. This causes the diaphragm to move lower, expanding the chest cavity and drawing air into the lungs.

Oxygen in the air moves into the blood vessels surrounding the alveoli when you breathe in. At the same time, carbon dioxide moves from the blood vessels into the alveoli. When you exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and moves up. This pushes the air out of the lungs. The air you exhale has a high concentration of carbon dioxide.

Respiratory Disease Lung Cancer- Smoking is the leading cause of Lung Cancer. Bronchitis- Inflammation of the Bronchial Tubes. –Causes shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing to bring up mucus. Emphysema- Damage to the Alveoli that results in breathing problems and coughing.

Respiratory Disease Asthma- Inflammation of the Respiratory System resulting in wheezing and shortness of breath. –Triggers- Allergens such as pollen, dust and cigarette smoke.
