The First President 1789 – Washington begins his first term as President NYC is the capital of the US Americans followed his journey from Virginia to New York Inauguration – a ceremony in which the President takes the oath of office Precedent/Precedence – an example to follow for those in the future

The Executive Branch Federal government at this point was only 75 post offices, a few clerks, and an army of 672 soldiers Executive Branch Departments: Treasury, State, War Each department was lead by a secretary chosen by the President

Presidential Cabinet Sec. of Treasury = Alexander Hamilton – Manages finances Sec. of State = Thomas Jefferson – Manages relations abroad Sec. of War = Henry Knox – Advice on military affairs Vice President = John Adams – General council Attorney General = Edmund Randolph – Offers legal advice

Establishing the Judiciary Judiciary Act of 1789 – provides for 6 Supreme Court Justices Under the Supreme Court was 3 circuit courts and 13 district courts John Jay was the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

Chisholm v. Georgia -Jay and the six other Supreme Court justices decide that a member of the public has the right to sue a state -Sovereign power lied in the power of the people and not the states

Homework Find another Supreme Court case that Chief Justice John Jay resided over! Provide a very short description about the details of the case and how it affected the involved parties.
