Multiply and Divide Monomials Intro to Algebra Farris 2015
2
I can multiply and divide monomials.
3
What? Monomial? I have NO clue what that is! A monomial is a number, a variable, or a product of numbers and/or variables. Monomials 80, x, 8x NOT monomials x + 5, x 2 – y 2
4
Factor a Number To factor means to write it as a product of its factors. A monomial can be factored as a product of prime numbers and variables with no exponent greater than 1. Are you confused yet? Definitions Prime Number – whole number that has exactly two unique factors, 1 and itself. Composite Number – whole number that has more than two factors.
5
Product of Powers Property Multiply powers with the same base by adding their exponents. a M x a n = a m+n Example 2 4 x 2 3 = 2 4+3 Let’s Do It! 4 3 x 4 5
6
Quotient of Powers Property Divide powers with the same base by subtracting their exponents. a m ÷ a n = a m-n Example 3 6 ÷ 3 2 = 3 6-2 Let’s Do It! 8 5 8 3
