1
Growth Mindset and CMP
2
Many kids give up too easily, many kids say they “can’t do math”, many kids won’t get involved for fear of making a mistake….maybe if we change that “mindset”, we change a generation of math thinkers!
3
Do you mostly AGREE or do you DISAGREE with the following: 1. Your intelligence is something you are born with and cannot change very much. 2. You can learn new things, but you can’t really change how smart you are. 3. No matter how smart you are, you can always grow quite a bit. 4. You can always change how intelligent you are.
4
Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset Embrace challenges Persevere when things get tough Hard work gets you everywhere LEARN from mistakes Find inspiration in the success of others Avoid challenges Give up when things get tough See effort as pointless Ignore useful feedback Feel threatened by others’ successes
5
Growth mindset and CMP CMP has high expectations of all students. All students are asked sophisticated mathematical questions and are expected to persevere in their explorations to these questions, looking for patterns, generalizing, validating, and sharing and critiquing each others work.
6
How can we “grow” it with our students in our classrooms?
7
Set the stage early… 5 important lessons to set up the school year… YOUCUBED out of Stanford University
8
Day 1 It’s all about your “mindset”…EVERYONE can do well in math!
9
Day 2 Brain Crossing – connect the symbols with the pictures
10
Day 3 Speed…it’s about thinking deeply, not about how fast you are!
11
Explain and justify to a neighbor: 1. Construct a square with exactly ¼ the area of the original square. Convince your partner. 2. Construct a triangle with exactly ¼ the area of the original square. 3. Construct another triangle, also with ¼ the area, that is NOT congruent to the first one you constructed.
12
4.Construct a square with exactly ½ the area of the original square. 5.Construct another square, also with ½ the area, that is oriented differently from the one you constructed in #4.
13
Day 4 It’s about seeing the PATTERNS
14
Day 5 MISTAKES are actually what grow your brain!
15
How do you see the shape growing?
16
Mindset Brain Crossing Patterns Speed Mistakes
17
Not fully a growth mindset…YET
18
Don’t give up…
19
What if I get stuck?
20
Learn from mistakes instead of being embarrassed of them…
21
“I’m not smart…”
22
I was born with certain abilities…
