1 Major Academic Plan (MAP) Why become an elementary teacher with a major emphasis in mathematics? A major in mathematics will increase your understanding of elementary mathematics, of how elementary students make sense of mathematics, of the mathematics standards required in elementary school, and of ways to support students’ learning of mathematics. It will increase your perspective on how mathematics grows beyond the K-8 level and on the role of mathematics in the world today. Teaching mathematics to elementary students allows you to make a difference in the lives of young people by empowering them to understand the world mathematically, use quantitative reasoning to make decisions in their lives, and expand their opportunities to choose interesting careers.
