Outbreak of the Revolution Advantages of the British Money and Manufacturing Organization and Training Advantages of the U.S. Knowledge of the land Revolutionary War – 1775-1783 US Perspective – British shouldn’t rule them – only colonial counsels have the right to pass taxes British Perspective – US should contribute to the Empire and should pay for their own protection from Natives
44
Happy Day I meet your Parents Day! Today: 1. Notes 2. Federalists vs Anti Federalists Activity 3. Discussion/Debate 4. Concluding Notes HW: STUDY FOR YOUR QUIZ
45

But we are not weak, if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature has placed in our power.”– Patrick Henry ● Colonists use knowledge of the land to launch surprise attacks against the British – Battle of Yorktown: 1781 last British army surrenders to the Colonists
46
Constitutional Convention 1787 ● 1787 convention to create new government – Debate over balancing strong government with state/individual freedom ● Federalists: want a strong national government to guarantee America’s power ● Antifederalists: want to keep as much freedom for the states and individual as possible
47
Federalists vs. Anti-Federalists What were the Federalist and Anti-Federalist views on government during the Constitutional Convention and ratification conventions? What side would you have supported? You have a choice, when you’ve completed the chart on the front and read through all the documents you can represent your analysis through either a short essay or a cartoon.
48
Discussion What are the pros and cons of the Federalist and Anti-Federalist positions on representation? What are the pros and cons of the Federalist and Anti-Federalist positions on foreign policy? What type of people would you guess tended to be Federalists? Anti-Federalists? Do you see any versions of these issues still playing out in our country today?
49
What really happened… ● U.S. Constitution creating a strong central government ratified – big win for Federalists: only white male landowners can vote, Senate not elected ● Checks and Balances: Three branches of government prevent each other from having too much power – Legislative – Executive – Judicial ● Bill of Rights: added at request of anti-Federalists to protect individual freedoms
