Male Anatomy - Terminology Penis: male reproductive organ Testes: the organs that make sperm and testosterone Scrotum: Regulates the temperature of the testes so that sperm can form correctly

Male Anatomy – Terminology Sperm: Male Sex Cells Epididymis: where sperm mature Seminiferous Tubules: tubes inside the testes where sperm are made and formed

Male Anatomy – Terminology Vas Deferens: Pathway for sperm to get from the epididymis to the seminal vesicle Seminal Vesicle: storage area that produce most of the fluid that carry sperm down the urethra and out the penis

Male Anatomy – Terminology Prostate Gland & Cowper’s Gland Produce and add more fluid to the sperm Urethra: the tube that carries urine and sperm out of the body Semen: the fluid that carries the sperm Testosterone: male sex hormone Produced in Testes

Female Anatomy - Terminology Vagina: connects outside of body to uterus Uterus: muscular organ where the fetus grows during pregnancy Cervix: lower part of the uterus. Where the uterus meets the vagina

Female Anatomy - Terminology Fallopian Tubes: tubes that connect the Uterus to the Ovaries. Where conception occurs Endometrium: lining of the uterus

Female Anatomy - Terminology Ova: eggs Ovum: woman’s sex cell Ovaries: an organ where the ova and ovum are stored

Ovulation When one of the ovaries releases a mature ovum every month. When the ovum is released it is drawn into the fallopian tubes and moved toward the uterus. Women are born with all the ova they will ever have.

Menstruation The monthly breakdown and shedding of the endometrium. Lining of the Uterus thickens once a month If a woman becomes pregnant, the fertilized ova will attach itself to the wall of the uterus If the ovum is not fertilized, the lining of the uterus will be shed and the ovum and lining will be released

Menstruation This once a month bleeding of releasing the shedded endometrium is called a period. Every 28 days – Menstrual Cycle 21-35 days Age of First Cycle: 9-16 Menstrual Cycle – pg. 223
