Poetry

What is poetry? a type of literature in which words are carefully chosen and arranged to create certain effects.

Elements of Form Form- the way words are arranged on page. Two basic elements of form: 1. line (the main unit of all poems)- contains length and rhythm to emphasize meaning. rhythm- a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry. (similar to rythmic beats in music) 2. Stanza- the way lines are arranged in a group.

Rhyme Rhyme- the repetition of sounds at the end of words, as in more and roar. Poets use rhyme: a.) to make a poem songlike or playful b.) to emphasize sounds that suggest feelings. c.) to create rhythms that help convey a sense of emotion.

Lyric Poems Lyric poems- express the feelings and observations of a single experience in the life of a single speaker. These include: odes, sonnets, and elegies. -some forms have rhyme but not all lyric poems express this characteristic.

Ode Ode- a lyrics verse written in praise of, or dedicated to someone or something. It deals with serious themes, such as: justice, truth, or beauty. There are various types of odes which follow a different set of rules for lines, stanzas, and rhythm patterns.

The desolation of seclusion the howling silence of reclusion living vicariously through the video tube longing for relief from this solitude Minutes turn to hours, hours turn to days No cast of characters in this one -man plays Dinner served to a party of one alone to bed when the day is done One is the number of lonelines Missing that hug, that care, that kiss those precious moments meant to share I reach out but theres nobody there.

Elegy Elegy- a mournful poem, written for someone who is deceased.

O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won, The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring; But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells; Rise up--for you the flag is flung for you the bugle trills, For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths for you the shores a-crowding, For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! dear father! This arm beneath your head! It is some dream that on the deck, You've fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still; My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will; The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done; From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won; Exult O shores, and ring O bells! But I, with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead.

Free verse- a form that does not use formal structure or rhyme schemes. Sonnet- a lyric poem of 14 lines with a specific rhyme scheme.
