TYPES OF POEMS

HAIKU A three-line Japanese form of poetry. The first and third lines each have 5 syllables, and the second line has 7 syllables.

CONCRETE Poems that are shaped like what they are about. The poet arranges the lines to create a picture on a page.

LIMERICK A LIMERICK is a humorous 5 line poem that always follows the same pattern.

BALLAD A Ballad is a songlike poem that tells a story; often deals with adventure and romance.

FREE VERSE FREE VERSE refers to any poem that does not include rhyme or meter.

SONNET A SONNET is a 14 line lyric poem that ends in a rhyming couplet

COUPLET A COUPLET is formed when 2 lines of consecutive poetry rhyme. Often used at the end of a stanza.

Q UATRAIN A QUATRAIN is a poem or stanza of exactly 4 lines.

NARRATIVE POEM A NARRATIVE POEM is any poem that tells a story.

LYRIC POEM A LYRIC POEM is any poem which explores feelings or images. It does not tell a story.
