5. SUMMARY Rainsford is on a hunting trip with his friend Whitney in the Caribbean. He falls off his boat because he was listening to what seems to be gun shots and dropped his pipe and tried to get it but fell in and then swam towards the sound. He meets General Zaroff and is invited to dinner in his big mansion on Shipwreck Island. Rainsford later finds out that the general hunts humans for a game. Rainsford is then sent out into the jungle to survive the hunt with a bag of bread, moccasins, and a knife. Rainsford set traps like the first one called the man catcher, the tiger pit, and a spring action trap for Zaroff and used his hunting strategies to escape him and set up tricks for him. After killing Ivan with a trap and a dog, Rainsford swims around the island to climb into Zaroff’s bedroom and kills him. He then sleeps in the general’s bed after feeding him to the dogs.

6. THEME General Theme: Survival. Specific Theme: People will do anything to survive (Rainsford kills Zaroff).

7. CONFLICT Person Vs Person: Rainsford surviving against Zaroff, who is hunting him. Person Vs Person: Rainsford surviving Ivan, Zaroff’s acquaintance/helper. Person Vs Nature: Rainsford surviving the forests’ dangers (i.e the swamp and the quicksand.

8. LITERARY ELEMENTS Climax: Rainsford kills Zaroff. Rainsford has to kill him so then he will not have to be hunted anymore. Epiphany: When Rainsford finds out that Zaroff hunts humans. Zaroff then starts to hunt Rainsford and Rainsford has to survive. Pathos: When Rainsford falls off the yacht. Rainsford has to swim to the island to survive.
