Armenian Genocide Issue: –A group called “The Young Turks” took over the Ottoman Empire and began to eliminate any non-Turkish people.

Armenian Genocide –Armenians were falsely accused of joining the Ottoman’s enemy (Russia) in World War One.

Turkish soldiers stand proudly with the heads of Armenian leaders.

Armenian Genocide Outcome: –2 million Armenians killed. –Thousands more = refugees.

–To this day, the Turkish government denies that the genocide ever took place.

Cambodian Genocide Location – Cambodia –(Southeast Asia) Dates – 1975 – 1979 Victims – Cambodian civilians Aggressor – Khmer Rouge

Cambodian Genocide –Dictator Pol Pot forces people to move from the cities to farms.

Cambodian Genocide –Thousands of political enemies and people who resist the Khmer Rogueare photographed, tortured and then killed in rice fields.

Cambodian Genocide Outcome: –1 - 2 million Cambodians were killed Out of a population of 8 million –Pol Pot dies in his sleep 20 years later

Bosnian Genocide Location – Bosnia –(Southeast Europe) Dates – 1991-1999 Victims – Bosnian Muslims and Kosovars Aggressor – Serbians

Bosnian Genocide Issue: –Many different ethnic groups are packed into the country of Yugoslavia.

Bosnian Genocide –1991 – Civil War: two regions in Yugoslavia declare their independence. –Serbs begin “ethnic cleansing” of Bosnian Muslims.

Bosnian Genocide –Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic orders the killing of 6,000 Bosnians

Bosnian Genocide –He is later put on trial for war crimes but dies in captivity in 2006

Bosnian Genocide Outcome: –200,000 Muslims killed –Over 1 million homeless

Rwandan Genocide Location – Rwanda –(Central Africa) Dates –1994 Victims – Tutsis Aggressor – extremist Hutus

Rwandan Genocide Issue: –Belgium ruled Rwanda indirectly through the Tutsis Minority of the population

Rwandan Genocide –1994 - civil war breaks out –Extremist Hutus murder thousands of Tutsi civilians And any Hutus who try to help the Tutsis

Rwandan Genocide Outcome: –1 million Tutsis murdered –Another million fled to neighboring countries as refugees –About 50,000 Tutsi orphans
