Agenda: August 25, 2014 Learning Goal: I can provide specific information based on my observations using probeware Jumpstart (5mins) Log Into IQWST (10mins) Practice using Probeware (20 minutes) Brainstorm: How do you get the energy that you need? On Padlet ContainerColorOdorTemp (C) Volume (mL) Liquid AColorlessOdorless22.0100 Liquid BColorlessOdorless60.0100 The table above describes 2 liquids in identical containers, sitting on the lab table. Which one of the following statements is accurate: A.Liquid A and B are the same liquid, B is just hotter B.Liquid A and B have the same mass, as the their volumes are the same C.Liquid A’s particles have a lower average kinetic energy than liquid B D.Liquid B is a sample of water that has just been heated

Testing Sensors One unit per table Each person must use the unit and the probe. (30 secs) Pass the unit to the next person and record data. On one sheet of paper: List the names of your group members What probe they used The average number of the probe they used.
3
Brainstorm: How do I get the energy I need? With a partner, Think Pair Share, ways to get the energy that you need. As a group, we will collect ideas. Then you will share your ideas on Padlet.

What does this say? esgg sgeg gegs gsge August 26 and 27 Agenda Jumpstart (5 mins) Review of Brainstorm about getting energy ( 5 mins) IQWST Activity: What happens to my body when I run around school. (60 mins) No Homework 1 2 3 The following are drawings that are representative of boxes with atoms in them. Which box is a solid? Which is a liquid and which is a gas? Learning Goal: I can recognize what happens inside my body when I run around school.

How do I get the energy to do things? What do we know about how you get energy to do things? What have you head about how you get your energy from other science classes? What have you heard about how you get your energy from TV/News/Friends/Family? From your experiences how do you think you get your energy? Do you think anything else gives your body energy? Does everything you do need energy? What are some things you do that need a lot of energy? What are some things you do that are little energy
6
Pre-Activity You will ALL jog for 3 minutes but you will be taking different measurements. You will need to take a before and after measurement. Remember how to use the probeware….Watch on screen. Remember to use a UNIT OF MEASURE (e.g. ppm, bpm, ) YOU MUST COLLECT YOUR DATA IMMEDIATELY after the jogging. Once in your group, Log in to IQWST to answer questions 1-3.
7
Group 1: Pedometer Supplies: Timers/Ipad for Website Record 0 for Before Jogging Count the number of steps during 3 minutes http://www.myfitnesspal.com/exer cise/lookup http://www.myfitnesspal.com/exer cise/lookup Calculate the calories burned after exercise by using that site above.
8
Group 2: CO 2 Supplies: Sensor, Handheld Unit, Timer Plug in sensor. Get it ready Breathe into a bag until it inflates. Stick CO2 sensor in bag to get ppm Record your reading of ppm before jogging. Jog for 3 minutes and then breathe into a bag until it inflates. Quickly use the CO2 sensor to record after jogging.
9
CO2 Carbon Dioxide with BTB (Bromenthymol Blue) Fill beaker to 50 mL with BTB solution Time how many seconds it takes for the blue solution to turn yellowish/green Rinse out the beaker but keep the straw. Refill the solution to 50 mL. Jog for 3 minutes Record how many seconds to turn color to greenish/yellow.
10
Group 3: Heart Rate Timer Find your pulse. Record your heart rate in beats per minute before exercising. You can take your heart rate for 15 secs and multiply by 4 to get your bpm Jog for 3 minutes and record your heart rate in beats per minute. You can use the formula of record heart rate for 15 secs and then multiply by 4 to get your heart rate
11
Group 4: Skin Temperature Supplies needed: Hand held unit and Temp Sensor Place the silver side of the sensor on the inside of your wrist. Record the average temp after 20 secs. Jog for 3 minutes Record the temperature of your skin after jogging to inside of your wrist for 20 secs.
12
Group 5: Breathing rate Timer Count the number of breaths you take before exercising Jog for 3 minutes Count the number of breaths you take after exercising.
13
After Activity On IQWST website fill in your group’s data. Choose a reporter to share out the data from the group. Data you should have seen…..
14
Questions to Consider We know that exercising uses a lot of energy. We saw that there were a lot of changes that happened in your body when you used energy. Why did these changes happen? Why did the amount of CO 2 increase? Why did you heart rate increase? Why did your skin temp decrease? IS there any place in this activity where you might have seen a chemical reaction? Is there any place where an energy conversion took place?
