The British Take Action French & Indian War part of a larger struggle between France & Britain Fought for control of –World trade –Power on the seas War lasts 1754-1763 War against France fought by British colonists at first Britain appointed General Edward Braddock after French built new forts (1754)

The Fall of New France 1759 big year for British! British captured some French islands in West Indies & Havana, Cuba Defeated French in India Destroyed French fleet sent to help French in Canada

Battle of Quebec Quebec-capital of New France British general Wolfe attacked city using poorly guarded path up a cliff Battle fought on Plains of Abraham outside fortress of Quebec French defeated Wolfe killed in battle French commander, Marquis de Montcalm wounded & died next day

Treaty of Paris Officially ended the war in 1763 France kept sugar islands in West Indies France lost Canada & most lands east of Mississippi River Spain (France’s ally) lost Florida, but received French lands west of Mississippi River & port of New Orleans

Pontiac’s War Chief of Ottawa village (near Detroit) 1763 Pontiac put together an alliance Attacked British fort at Detroit Other war parties captured British outposts in Great Lakes

Pontiac did not capture strongholds of Niagara, Fort Pitt or Detroit War ended in 1765 after Pontiac’s allies were defeated Pontiac signed peace treaty & was pardoned

Proclamation of 1763 King George III declared that Appalachian Mountains were western boundary of colonies Angered land speculators who had bought land west of mountains Angered colonists who wanted to settle west of Appalachians
