Chapter 7 Deeper Into the Cell

Review of previous notes:

3. Two basic cell types (figure 7.2) a. Prokaryotes 1. no membranes around organelles; unorganized 1. no membranes around organelles; unorganized 2. ex. bacteria b. Eukaryotes 1. have membranes around organelles; organized 2. ex. plants, animals, fungi

B. Cell Parts- Structure 1. Plasma Membrane a. Maintains homeostasis b. Selectively permeable c. Fluid mosaic structure

2. Cell Wall a.Found in plants & fungi b.Contains cellulose c.Adds extra strength & protection

C. Cell Parts- Control 1. Nucleus 2. Chromatin- DNA, RNA

D. Cell Parts- Assembly and Transport of Proteins 1. ER- transports materials to & from ribosomes 2. Ribosomes

3. Golgi apparatus 4. Vacuoles

Protein Production & Secretion Why? To get proteins produced & released from the cell Where? Digestive system, reproductive system How?

NucleusCell Membrane instructions ER amino acids Ribosome if protein stays in cellif protein is secreted Vacuole Golgi ER Cell membrane secretion from cell

E. Cell Parts- Energy Transformers 1. Chloroplasts - photosynthesis 2. Mitochondria- cellular respiration

G. Cell Parts- the others 1. Lysosomes 2. Cytoplasm

d. Cell membrane Structure: Phospholipid bilayer 1. mostly phosphates + lipids: Water soluble on both surfaces and water-insoluble in the middle. 2. cholesterol adds stability 3. proteins and carbohydrates on the outer surface are used for identification. 4. membrane transport proteins go all the way through the membrane and work like gates to let bigger molecules pass through.

Homework Draw Figure 7-12. Include the labels Define: 1. diffusion 2. concentration gradient 3. active transport 4. endocytosis 5. exocytosis 6. facilitated diffusion

Diffusion

How things get in & out of cells: Diffusion Diffusion Facilitated diffusion Facilitated diffusion Active transport Active transport Endocytosis Endocytosis Exocytosis Exocytosis
