5  MLA Format  1” margins  12 point font  Times New Roman  THIS IS NOT THE DEFAULT TO WORD SO CHANGE IT!  Double space after heading  So it should look like…

7  No “I” or “the reader” ---you can use “I” in common app essay  No contractions  Answer the question asked  NO SUMMARY (I already read the book thanks anyway)

8  Creates a weak and often vague sentence.  Scholars debate over passive voice  RULE OF THUMB…Informational, research, expository, No passive Voice. o Creative writing can use passive voice, if you are using it for a purpose.

9  Passive Voice almost always uses a form of “to be” followed by a verb in the past tense.  The AP test was taken by the students. “to be” followed by past tense verb

10  If your subject is at the end of the sentence, you probably used passive voice.  The homework was done by the AP students.

13  Every essay is an argument o Prove your point o Cite or reference o Use arguing words o Confidence is better than guessing to be right o You can’t be wrong, but you can inadequately prove you are right.
