5. NERVOUS SYSTEM (BRAIN ) DEPRESSNANT: Reaches brain as soon after it is consumed and depresses nerve activity. Slows down Nervous System or large amounts of alcohol may shut it down  Reduces inhibition, attention, memory, motor coordination (speech) & emotional behavior.  Long Term- loss of intellectual abilities, memory & problem solving capability. Actually can shrink the size of the functioning brain.

9. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM  Causes stomach to produce too much gastric juice. (nausea, vomiting & diarrhea)  Ulcers, gastritis & pancreatitis can occur with long term use

10. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: STOMACH, LIVER, KIDNEY Kidneys have increased urine production (trying to rid body of alcohol) Dehydration from cell expansion (thirst) Oxidation in the liver (changes alcohol into water, carbon dioxide ½ ounce per hour) causing cirrhosis of the liver

15. WHY 21?  Alcohol addiction sets in quickly in younger people.  Frontal lobe of the brain doesn’t fully develop until age 25 (judgment area of the brain is not yet mature)  Teenagers are more likely to be risk takers  Studies show more teenagers die while drinking then adults

BEING REAL WITH YOURSELF  Write in your journal your actual response: What information do you have about body systems and alcohol that would make you think twice about getting into a car with someone who is intoxicated?  Write a good topic sentence.  Write a paragraph explaining why it would be a bad choice to get into that car.  Include three of alcohols effects that impacts the driver’s ability to drive safely.
