Toxics Use Reduction Institute Time to Get Your Hands Dirty! Oh wait, I mean get you parts clean. RI Workshop – September 22, 2006 Providence, RI

Why We Are Here 36 companies using TCE for cleaning –Identified by RI DEM as out of compliance RI Agencies, Region 1 EPA and TURI Lab –Help companies find an alternative cleaning chemistry –Soil samples & parts were collected by EPA –Brought to TURI lab Identify and test possible alternative cleaners –Soil types included buffing compounds and oils »Seventeen samples collected from 10 companies »23 trials run »25 Products Evaluated

Product Selection Based On –Contaminant removal –Substrate compatibility –Equipment compatibility Use SSL Database or Vendor Literature

Successful Products Tested Buffing Compound –Magnaflux Daraclean 283 –US Polychemical Polyspray Jet 790 XS –Oakite Inproclean 3800 –Buckeye XL 100 –Matchless Metal Polish Co. MC 132 –Alconox Detergent 8 –Mangill Gillite 0650 CI Oils –Magnaflux Daraclean 283 –US Polychemical Polyspray Jet 790 XS –Oakite Inproclean 3800 –Brulin Aquavantage 1400 –International Products Surface Cleanse 930 –Warren Chemical Sea Wash Blue

Establish Baseline How Do We Do That? –Quantitative Gravimetric analysis –Qualitative Visual inspection Why Do We Do That? –Measure how effective your current process is Compare the alternatives

Test the Alternatives Based on Current Operating Conditions –Dilutions to use –Hot or cold –Equipment –Time –Rinsing –Drying

Phase 1 Testing Chemistry Only –No mechanical energy This is what you will be doing today

Phase 2 Add Mechanical Energy –Use best cleaners This is what the lab can do for you or This is what you could be doing today

Phase 3 Piloting – Lab Setting –Clean supplied parts using best products This is what the lab can do for you This is what you could be doing today

Phase 4 Piloting On-site –Set up cleaning process at your facility and compare directly with current process This is something the lab can help you with

Phase 5 Final Adoption of Alternative Into Cleaning Process

Hands On Phase 1 Contaminate pre-weighed coupons with your buffing compound or oil (9 coupons) Weigh coupons to determine how much contaminant you are starting with Select 3 chemistries –All have been warming to ~130 F Place 3 coupons in each chemistry Clean for 5 minutes with immersion cleaning Rinse and Dry Weigh again Calculate effectiveness of cleaners –Can also compare visual amongst the three cleaners Qualitative method

Hands On Phase 2 Select cleaner that worked the best Place in ultrasonic bath and de-gas for 5 minutes Contaminate 3 pre-weighed coupons Clean for 5 minutes in ultrasonic energy Rinse and Dry Weigh again Calculate effectiveness of cleaners

Hands On Phase 3 Select top cleaner and place in ultrasonic bath and de-gas for 5 minutes Insert part for 5 minutes using ultrasonic energy Rinse and Dry Visual analysis –Take part home and subject part to next phase of process (plating, painting, etc.)

Companies Ready for Phase 3 Participated in Pre-Workshop testing at TURI Lab on supplied soils –R &R Polishing Compound –Sanford White Co Inc –Nulco –IRA Green –RibCo –C+J Finishing –Eli Metal –RI Heat Treat –ADI
