Learning Objectives: Students will be able to identify and explain the function of each part of a flower.

Warm up Draw a flower on your warm up sheets.
Label any parts that you know. Write down the function of any parts that you know.

What do the parts do? Add these notes to your model.
Sepals- protect the flower when it is a bud Stamen- anther produces male sex cells (pollen) Pistil- stigma traps pollen Style is where pollen tube grows down to female sex cells. Petals- colourful to attract the insects Botanical gardens booklet 1- flowers and pollination (blue) Pistil- ovary produces female sex cells (ovules) Nectaries- give out sugary liquid to attract insects Add these notes to your model. 5

Dissecting a flower In pairs, you will be dissecting a flower.
Follow the instructions for the lab step-by-step. Record your observations as you go along. Keep ALL parts of the flower intact! Be careful of sharp objects.

Flower Dissection Museum Display
The new wing of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh have a new room on the diversity of life. They would like you to design them a museum display that shows the parts and functions of a flower.

Include all the parts of the flower on your lab sheets. Include the function of each part of the flower. Be easy to read and clear. Have all correct information.
