How Do Plants Reproduce? All plants undergo sexual reproduction that involves fertilization. The fertilized egg is now called a zygote. Two types of plants: gymnosperms (cone producing plants) and angiosperms (flowering plants)

Gymnosperm Reproduction Cycle (p209): 1. Most produce 2 types of cones (male and female), which are covered with scales. 2. (A)Male cones produce pollen grains. (B)Female cones develop into ovules- structure that contains the egg cell. The ovule later becomes the seed. 3. Two egg cells form inside each ovule on the female cone. 4. Pollination: transfer of pollen from male cone to female cone.

5. Fertilization: The ovule closes and seals in the pollen. The scales also close. The fertilized egg cell inside the ovule becomes a zygote. 6. Female cones remain on the tree while the seeds mature. Female cone increases in size. Male cones fall off the tree after they shed their pollen. 7. When seeds are mature, the scales open. The wind shakes the seeds out of the cone and carries them away.

Angiosperm Reproduction Cycle (p210): 1. Flower is produced. 2.(A) Cells in the anther produce pollen. 2. (B) Inside the ovary, egg cell is produced in each ovule. 3. Pollen grains are trapped on the stigma. 4. The pollen grain produces a pollen tube that grows into the ovule. A sperm cell moves through the pollen tube and fertilizes the egg cell.

5. Ovule develops into a seed. Fertilized egg becomes the seed’s embryo. 6. The ovary develops into a fruit. 7. A seed grows into a new plant.
