7. Newborns 2012 Of all newborn children in 2012 (59 856), 53 % were born in university hospitals, 37 % in central hospitals and 10 % in other hospitals. One in four children were born in Helsinki University Central Hospital (Kätilöopisto Maternity Hospital, HUCH Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Jorvi Hospital). There were 12 hospitals with fewer than 1 000 deliveries in 2012. There were 146 deliveries outside hospitals and 63 children were born on the way to the hospital. The proportion of infants with a birth weight of more than 4 000 g has decreased by just under 4 percentage points over the past 20 years, being 17 per cent in 2012.
