Freud’s 3 Basic Structures of Personality
Completely Unconscious Irrational Seek Immediate Satisfaction Ruled by the Pleasure Principle ID Sigmund Freud EGO Known as Reality Principle Uses a combination of psychological processes to add balance Problem solving dimension of our personality Good & Bad Side (Work Through) SUPER EGO Judges your own behavior as Right or Wrong Should you not live up to these morals… Feel Guilt, Shame & Anxiety Behavior to be encouraged in society… Shoulds, Oughts & Musts

Freud’s Iceberg Theory (Mental Awareness)
EGO: Top of Iceberg (above water) EGO (Conscious) EGO: Know all the time no matter what. Example: Mother’s name SUPER EGO: Slush underneath the surface Can not immediately remember but will remember Example: What you had for dinner last night SUPER EGO (Sub-Conscious) ID (Unconscious) Can Not Access ** Freud says things in our unconscious can be brought up to our conscious awareness and things in our conscious may be repressed to our unconscious

Freud’s Psychosexual Stages
Aggressive (outspoken, loud: Roseanne Barr or Eddie Murphy) Dependent (timid, shy, does not say much: Mr. Rogers) 1. Oral (0 -1) ** Trauma during this time could cause one to split into 2 groups Retentive (prim & proper, uptight, orderly: Felix from the “Odd Couple”) Expulsive (messy, disorderly, rule-bender: Oscar from the “Odd Couple”) 2. Anal (1 – 3) ** Maybe mom wouldn’t change the child’s diaper

Freud’s Psychosexual Stages
“Love” - Oedipus “Hate” - Electra Oedipus, abandoned at birth, unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother 3. Phallic (3- 6) ** Boys = love mom & distant from dad. Girls = “daddy’s girl” **Attraction to opposite-sex parent & mean toward same-sex parent Unfinished Business Dormant Time 4. Latency (7 – 11) ** Freud believed this stage is a quite time during which psychosexual development is “on hold” Sexual Maturity Healthy Outlook on life 5. Genital (13 – Up) ** The reason teens may have emotion & turmoil is unresolved conflicts of earlier years Story…

Freud’s Psychosexual Stages
According to Freud, we move through development a little at a time, but if fixated on an event development could stop. Fixation – Growth is temporarily or partially stopped Example: Oral needs = smoking Some say those who were not breastfed may not have had their oral needs met and are more likely to smoke.

Birth Order: Alfred Adler
Notes 1. McCrimmon will use her own children as an example of Adler’s theory that birth order plays a role in ones personality type. Adler believes parents help shape their children's personality years between children the scheme starts over. 3. Twins: who comes out 1st is considered 1st born. 4. Step Children/Divorce: Learn different roles of each house. Usually all kids mix together. 5. Only child: is considered 1st born.

Birth Order: Alfred Adler
“Perfect & Bossy” 1st Born: Brandon (Age 13) No one to rely on. Does not have to share. Before: Time was spent with only 1 child. Now: Time is shared with ALL. Bossy Example: Mom says, “I am going upstairs, Brandon you are in charge.” Mom leaves room. Brandon says, “Did you hear mom? Dillon, clean-up. Mason, shut-up. Tatum, I am telling.” Scholarly & Conservative Example: Parents start out very conservative & get more and more liberal. Brandon used a “Binky”. If the binky fell on the floor it was washed and boiled in hot water. If Tatum’s binky fell on the floor I picked it up and whipped it off on my pants and gave the binky back to her.

Birth Order: Alfred Adler
3rd Born: Mason (Age 11) Opposite Example: Magnet - No matter how hard you try to put them together they just do not fit Conflict Example: One child is very “boring”(stays home, does not interact with others) other child is outgoing Younger kids learn from older ones Example: Dad says to younger child, “Be home at 6:00 to do homework.” Older kids chime in, “Oh, dad does not get pissed until 8:00.” Forget-Me-Not “Rebellious”

Birth Order: Alfred Adler
4th Born: Tatum (Age 9) Gets Everything Example: She screams and almost always gets whatever she wants Cookie Rule for children 1, 2 & 3. #4 can eat the whole box. Example: All kids get one cookie for snack. Baby cries and she gets the whole box. “Just give it to her!” Note: According to Alfred Adler, feelings of inferiority are universal during infancy and childhood. The Baby “Spoiled”
