3. Facts The play is loosely based on 2 real-life kings. It is set in Scotland. As the play begins, Duncan is the King of Scotland. Macbeth is one of his generals and the Thane (Lord) of Glamis. A war between Scotland and Norway is underway.

4. Inspiration The play was written as a gift to King James. Banquo (a character from the play) was his ancestor, and James was a big believer in witches, which appear in the play. Its setting, Scotland, was James’ country of birth.
