2. Prompts for discussion What makes Portland livable? What potential problems and opportunities exist with future growth? Besides the issues presented in the videos, what other ideas have you gained in other classes? What is the role of the sciences in determining solutions to these problems and opportunities? How can urban planning in Portland act as a model for future planning around the world?

3. Team Time Share with your team the results of your individual research. What would you like to study as a team? What areas of downtown Portland will you observe, and what types of quantitative data would your team like to collect? Use one of your maps to show where your group plans on going and hand it in before you leave. Return to the Tiffany Center by 11:45am having already eaten lunch.

4. Debriefing the fieldtrip Discuss general observations with your team

5. Focus on a problem As a group, focus on ONE potential problem/opportunity/issue facing the City of Portland as it develops in the future (15 minutes).

6. Individual Brainstorming Individually, spend 15 minutes writing about potential solutions to the problem or issue your group identified. Consider moral, ethical, social, economic and/or environmental implications. Consider international dimensions. Are there other cities with the same problem? What have they done? Results?

7. Proposals: Content Generate 3 different proposals in response to your problem/issue. Include data in your proposals. Emphasize the role of science in solving your problem. Outline the pros and cons of each proposal. Use and cite reputable and academic sources; include a bibliography.

8. Proposals: Impact How might this proposal be adapted for another city in another country? What are the moral, ethical, social, economic and/or environmental implications of your proposals?

10. Proposals/Reflection Deadline Complete and post your Group’s 3 proposals on Google Docs. Post in your Group’s folder. Construct a personal reflection using the prompts found on the back of your handout and submit to your science teacher’s Turnitin.com page. Note: this may not be your Group 4 Teacher Leader Deadline: Friday, February 12 th at midnight.

11. What’s Next? Visit Google Docs and read proposals from two other teams. Respond to one proposal from each team. Sign your name and Group # to your response. Copy comments and email to your Group 4 Teacher Leader. Deadline is Monday, Feb. 22nd.

12. Personal Reflection  How did you contribute to Selection of an issue? Data collection? Group proposal? Describe your role in the collaborative dynamics of your group. Discuss your strengths and weaknesses as part of a group solving this kind of problem.
