6. Two Types of satellite Monitoring satellites Communication satellites

7. Monitoring satellites orbit the earth. They orbit at a height of about 500km (this is quite low!) They take about 90 minutes to do one complete orbit. These satellites are used to monitor things like weather.

8. Communications satellites orbit the Earth much further up.These satellites are about 40,000km away. These satellites are designed to orbit slowly so they are always above the same part of the earth.

9. This type of satellite is said to have a Geostationary Orbit. Satellites with a Geostationary orbit are used for TV broadcasts and mobile ‘phones.
