Workshop 1 Noise in the entertainment sector Conclusions

Noise risks in the sector  Esko Toppila oA wide variety of workers are employed in this sector – not just musicians – whose careers are at risk from occupational ill-health. oA nice noise is still damaging! Acute hearing very important for a musician and technicians oThere is a high prevalence of tinnitus and hyperacusis in musicians oTechnical and service staff (e.g. Sound mixers and waiters) risk hearing impairment as their need to communicate can expose them to high noise levels

Exposure in music venues  Kim Kähari oSmall music clubs present difficult venues for reducing noise exposure without adversely affecting the audience’s enjoyment oImportance of a multi disciplinary, multistakeholder involvement oImproved layout and changes in surfaces (e.g. mounting absorbent material on walls) let to reduced exposures oSurveys of workers and audience showed positive results

Exposure of orchestral musicians  Gabriele Fröhlich oSurvey found that risk assessment was not always adequate when addressing noise risks. oCare must be taken in implementing control measures to ensure effectiveness. A holistic approach using construction measures (e.g. rehearsal room design), technical measures, work organisational measures, and personal hearing protection may all be necessary. oHealth surveillance (audiometry) is important.

Discussion opened by Ms Dalby and Coronel-Timmermans  Unique industry as they are the noise generators  The industry want the directive, but there are challenges in its implementation  There is awareness of what the industry needs to do  Lots of work ahead, all stakeholders must work together

Discussion continued  Technical solutions exist and are beginning to be implemented, but more technical innovation needed  Awareness of problems rising and young musicians especially receptive, but still some resistances to overcome and more information-training needed needed e.g. self educated sound technicians  Guidelines being developed, information exchange needed, common standards needed
