Introduction to Body Systems Levels of Organization
2
What are the levels of organization? Atoms Molecules Cells Tissues Organs Organ Systems Organism Human Body PS CHON Carbohydrates, Proteins, Lipids, Nucleic Acids Heart, Lungs, Stomach, Bones, Muscles etc. Connective, Epithelial, Nervous, Muscular Animal, (eukaryotic cells) Digestive, Excretory, Nervous, Endocrine, Immune, Skeletal, Muscular, Reproductive, Integumentary, Circulatory, and Respiratory
3
What are the 4 tissues types?
4
What are the 4 tissue types? 1. Muscular Tissue: cells contract Striated: (skeletal) voluntary control, movement Smooth: involuntary control, digestion, breathing Cardiac: involuntary control, heartbeat
5
What are the 4 tissues types? 2. Nervous Tissue: communication with all parts of the body; carries impulses to and from Central Nervous System - CNS Neuron (nerve cell) CNS - Brain, Spinal cord PNS - Peripheral Nervous system
6
What are the 4 tissues types? 3. Epithelial Tissue: layers of cells that line or cover all internal and external surfaces of the body. protects internal environment from external conditions. skin - secretes products (oil, sweat, enzymes) found on skin, surfaces of organs, and digestive tract
7
What are the 4 tissues types? 4. Connective Tissue: most abundant tissue type; several functions Connects body parts, protection, insulation, transportation bone, cartilage, fat, blood
8
Major Organ Systems 1.Muscular Skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscles 2.Skeletal Bones, cartilage, tendons and ligaments 3.NervousBrain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. 4.EndocrinePituitary, Hypothalamus, ovaries, testes 5.CirculatoryHeart, blood vessels and blood. 6.Immuneleukocytes, tonsils, adenoids, thymus, & spleen. 7.RespiratoryNose, trachea and lungs. 8.DigestiveMouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines. 9.ExcretoryKidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra 10.ReproductiveFemale: ovaries, oviducts, uterus, vagina and mammary glands. Male: testes, seminal vesicles and penis. 11.Integumentaryskin, hair, and nails
10
What structures are in the body cavities? Cranial: brain, CSF Spinal: spinal cord, CSF Thoracic: heart and lungs Diaphragm Abdominal: liver, stomach, kidneys
11
Questions #1 Name the four types of tissues in the human and give an example of each. #2 Describe how the skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, and circulatory systems function in a person swimming laps in a pool.
