1
JACKI BYRD, RN, BSN THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
2
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Group of ductless (no tubes) glands Secrete substances into blood stream Substances=hormones Hormones—chemical substances (messengers) Regulate growth and development Regulate metabolism Maintain fluid and chemical balance Control various sex processes Stimulate other endocrine glands
3
GLANDS OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Pituitary Thyroid Parathyroid Adrenal Pancreas Ovaries Testes Thymus Pineal body Placenta
4
PITUITARY GLAND Master gland Produces many hormones that affect other glands Located at base of brain
5
THYROID GLAND Makes hormones that regulate metabolism and control the level of calcium in the body Located in front of the trachea To produce hormones, it requires iodine
6
PARATHYROID GLANDS Four small glands Located behind (attached to) the thyroid Regulates amount of calcium in blood
7
ADRENAL GLANDS Located above each kidney Cause the fight or flight response Secretes epinephrine (adrenaline) or nor-epinephrine Stimulate male/female sex characteristics
8
PANCREAS Fish shaped organ Located behind stomach Secretes digestive juices Also secretes insulin Needed for the cells to absorb sugar from the body
9
OVARIES/TESTES Gonads-sex glands Ovaries: secrete hormones estrogen and progesterone to regulate menstruation and secondary sex characteristics Located on each side of uterus Testes: secrete testosterone Located in the scrotal sac, suspended outside the body
10
THYMUS Mass of tissue located in the upper part of chest, under sternum Active in early life Activates cells in the immune system Wastes away during puberty
11
PINEAL BODY Produces melatonin & serotonin Located in brain Not as much known about this gland
12
PLACENTA Temporary Produced during pregnancy Link between mother and unborn child
13
DISEASES OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Partner up…you may choose your partner…GO! You’ll have the rest of class to look up this information with your partner and you will present next class period after the quiz. If your disease has interesting pictures or videos, you may present them, as well.
14
DISEASE OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Information: Name of disease Which gland is affected? What hormone is involved? What are signs and symptoms? Is there a cure or treatment? Does it affect a certain population (group of people)? Any other “fun” facts?
15
1-giantism 2-dwarfism 3-Grave’s disease 4-hyperthyroidism 5-Addison’s disease 6-Cushing’s syndrome 7-Diabetes mellitus 8-Turner’s syndrome 9- Goiter 10-Pheochromocytoma
