National Mind Over more than 65 years Mind has been committed to make sure that everyone experiencing a mental health problem can access the support they need and is treated with the respect they deserve. Through public campaigns, influencing decision makers and the services our local Minds deliver in communities across England and Wales, we have touched millions of lives.

Your local Mind There are over 150 local Minds; your local Mind is H&F Mind… Each local Mind is an independent charity run by local people, for local people. Each is responsible for its own funding and the services it provides, but all are affiliated to National Mind. This affiliation ensures that each one meets Mind's quality standards of governance and service delivery. Local Minds respond to issues within their communities in a range of ways, including: involvement in the planning of local mental health services, local campaigning on mental health issues, linking with Mind's national campaign work activity aimed to raise awareness of, and change attitudes towards, mental health. Local Minds are predominantly service providers. Local Minds vary in size and the services that they offer. Local Mind associations

What is Mental Health?

…mental health is described as more than the absence of mental disorders or disabilities. Mental health is a state of well-being in which: an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully is able to make a contribution to his or her community. In this positive sense, mental health is the foundation for individual well- being and the effective functioning of a community. World Health Organisation Mental Health

Mental Ill Health A more than temporary state of mind that adversely affects your ability to function on a day to day basis Good Mental Health Mental Ill Health We all have Mental Health, some of us have mental health problems

A focus on Hammersmith and Fulham: It is estimated that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in any given year With a population of 182,500 in H&F the 1 in 4 statistic translates to 45,625… In 2012/13 H&F had the 8 th highest population with severe and enduring mental illness known to GPs in the country (2,452 people) Hammersmith & Fulham

Stigma What is stigma?

Stigma and discrimination The impact of Stigma? The attitudes people have towards those of us with mental health problems mean it is harder for them to work, make friends and in short, live a normal life. People become isolated They are excluded from everyday activities It is harder to get or keep a job People can be reluctant to seek help, which makes recovery slower and more difficult Their physical health is affected. Many people say that being discriminated against in work and social situations can be a bigger burden than the illness itself.

Stigma and discrimination How widespread is stigma? Discrimination against people with mental health problems is still widespread Time to Change survey showed that almost nine out of ten people with mental health problems (87%) reported the negative impact of stigma and discrimination on their lives (The Stigma Shout Survey)

BME groups: less likely to be referred to mental health services via GP More likely to be referred by the police or courts More likely to be sectioned under the Mental Health Act More likely to be placed in a secure unit and subjected to control and restraint BME stats

BME barriers Strategic aim of H&F Mind is to increase access to mental health services by BME groups What are the barriers? How can we overcome them?
