So what is YO Court?

Las Vegas Municipal Court’s Newest Specialty Court. Focuses on offenders and their families. Defendants, as well as their families, must participate in a year to two year long treatment program. Offenders range from 18-24 years of age. All offenders have been diagnosed with dependence (the disease of addiction.) What is "YO" Court?

Why Was Y.O. Court Started?

According to the Las Vegas Sun, Nevada ranks number one in distribution of prescription narcotics. The most distributed narcotics are Hydrocodone Methadone Morphine Oxycodone Addiction Has Become Pandemic Las Vegas Sun Newspaper (Quoting a federal study)

U.S.News and World reports July 15, 2010 Substance abuse treatment admissions for non medical use of prescription pain relievers have increased 400% over ten years

November 2010 Department 5 had over 12,000 open cases. 8756 cases are addictive substance related cases. Based on the violation codes* over 70% of the cases in department five were related to an addictive substance. * These numbers were taken November 12, 2010 from the current computer management system- The codes ran were for: possession of marijuana, DUI(drugs/alcohol), possession of drug paraphernalia, and public intoxication. (These numbers do not include other charges such as prostitution or battery domestic violence where addictive substance are commonly involved.) Court intervention had become necessary

Cost To The Las Vegas Community

Jail Costs To house an defendant in the local jail for a 12 month period would cost the tax payers of the City of Las Vegas an estimated $48,545. (The last audit for Las Vegas City Jail was $133 a day to house an inmate) Average 30 Participants x $54,000 x 1.5 (average time to graduate) = $2.2 m

Drug Usage $3,400 per month – 30 defendants = $1.2m annually Not sure if that is a savings but it is not happening while in the program

What is the result? 24- graduates Only one has been re-arrested that we know of. 10 have relapsed that we know about Only 4 are still in their active addiction 2 clean babies 0 fatalities 33 active participants
