LEAD SENTENCE This is the first sentence of a news story. There are all types of stories in a newspaper. This week—we are focusing on just standard news story.

LEAD SENTENCE The first sentence addresses the 5w’s Most of the time—the what is the first piece of information you convey. The sentence might be 25 words. Sometimes you can split it into two sentences.

MORE ON LEADS To find your focus, try writing a headline for your story. What would you say about it if you only had a few words? How would you describe your story to a friend? Answer in a sentence or two: What’s it about?

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT I am going to assign you a news lead to work on. You are going to work on it individually and then you are going to find the person with the same number as you, Compare leads and write the best one a sheet of paper.

POOLING TOGETHER Find a person who has the same number as you have. Chat and compare notes. Put you sentence on the board.
