3 Agrupamento Vertical de Escolas da Correlhã On a particularly winter day, Martin, a Roman soldier, was caught in a downpour with only his cape to protect him. While riding to get out of the horrible weather, he was approached by a half naked beggar. Martin, moved by the man’s misery, grabbed his sword, reached back for his cape, cut it in half and covered the beggar. When Martin covered the beggar the clouds drifted and beams of sun lit up the sky. In Portugal, whenever the weather is nice and sunny in November, we say it is the Summer of Saint Martin. We gather outside with friends next to an open fire. Children paint their faces with the coal used to grill the chestnuts as part of the fun and playing on this day. After the grapes are picked, they are transferred to the lagar, where they are selected and placed in containers. Some winemakers use stone treading tanks where workers march and tread upon the grapes until they have been liquefied. After crushing the grapes, the grape juice is left to ferment.
