Security and Shelter The classroom allows the students to feel secure, comfortable, safe, and protected. Example: Ms. Anders has plants that are placed at the children’s eye-level in her classroom.

Social Contact The classroom is arranged to promote student-student interaction and student- teacher interaction. Example: Ms. Anders’ arranged her desks in clusters to allow group interaction amongst her students.

Symbolic Identification The classroom provides visual cues and representations of the students in the classroom. Example: Ms. Anders has a birthday poster that shows each of her students’ birthdays in her classroom.

Task Instrumentality The classroom is organized in a manner that provides many ways to accomplish all necessary tasks. Example: Ms. Anders has cubbies in her classroom for the students to store their backpacks, lunches, and coats.

Pleasure The classroom is attractive for students and provides a sense of warmth. Example: Ms. Anders has covered her bulletin board with a brightly colored cloth.

Growth The classroom provides opportunities for growth in cognitive development and academic achievement. Example: Ms. Anders has various math manipulatives in her learning center that help to encourage cognitive growth.
