2 Progress FSILG handout Goal was to develop a general positive handout – Collaborative effort I have experience in publications for public relations and outreach My perspective guided by questions and concerns from parents Input from: Bob Ferrara, FSILG Office, AILG Board, students Sarah Goodman (DSL intern) formatted – Updated version posted on AILG web site (please plagiarize!) Every word was chosen with care Pilot Year/Learning Process Connect with students and parents to identify positive outreach and areas that need improvement – Information Gathering Listening to the needs of students: IFC, Panhel, individuals, LGC? Listening to parents: Parent Orientation, Family Weekend, informally through personal connections – Document Gathering Collecting a library of samples to share with all organizations In a Dropbox Association of Independent Living Groups Parent Outreach Committee

3 Events Parent Orientation – September UAAP – Dean’s Brunch: alums attend, student speakers – huge opportunity! – Panel ~200 people; Next year: handout, videotape? MIT Family Weekend – October MITAA/Parents’ Association – Over 2000 parents attended – Definitely hold an event! – Lesson learned: send invitation by email to parents Campus Preview Weekend (CPW) – April MIT Admissions – ~1050 students attend (2/3 of admitted) – Estimate 700-1000 parents; 1/3-2 parents, 1/3-1 parent, 1/3-no parent – Panels: Panhel (80-100), IFC (15-20), FSILG Office (~40) Graduation/Reunion Weekend – June MITAA? – Definitely hold event! – Send invitation by email to parents and alums Association of Independent Living Groups Parent Outreach Committee

4 Future Plans Planning for CPW – Especially room and time change for IFC Upgrade web sites – IFC: For Parents tab – FSILG/DSL site: Yolanda Lau AXO ’02 researching comparable schools – Could upgrade chapter web sites Individualized parent outreach – If your organization needs help with a particular aspect of Parent Outreach – e.g. Pi Phi member- looking at AXO parent/alum newsletter Timeline – Specific tasks to do at specific times: in January, reserve room for CPW Summer information to parents? – Investigating Association of Independent Living Groups Parent Outreach Committee
