2 Waking sleepwalkers Commonly heard idea that waking sleepwalkers might: –Give the sleep walker a heart attack –Physically attack the person waking them First, introduce the idea

3 What are we talking about Sleepwalking –People in a state of movement out of bed during nighttime sleep hours –Do have their eyes open –Are usually in 3rd or 4th stages of non REM or slow- wave sleep Danger –Causing a heart attack –Deep psychological problems! i.e.. startling the heck out of them Next, define terms!

5 Findings Most danger to sleepwalkers is themselves - tripping, falling, etc In stage 3 & 4, people are confused when awakened. Maybe startled, but not scared enough for a heart attack They may hit you out of confusion, but are not violent (beyond normal level) No evidence that heart attacks occur Some people try to use sleep walking as an excuse for violent behavior, but sleep researchers can determine if this might be the case What did you find?
