LE3-C4S1T4pg63-66 Behavior in the Workplace

Purpose This lesson will explain acceptable behavior in the workplace.

1. Define professional behavior. 2. Describe professional behavior in the workplace.

CPS Lesson Questions (1-2)

How many different jobs have you had where you had to learn the workplace behavior for that particular location? A.5 or more B.3-4 C.1-2 D.None yet.

True or False: Your behavior in the workplace can have a big impact on how you advance in your career. A.True B.False

List 2-3 behaviors that you might demonstrate in a work environment that would be different than how you act at home. (Use CPS “Pick a Student” for this question)

 Your behavior in the workplace can make a big difference in your career.  Others will form opinions of you based on your behavior.  You must be aware of your dress, your conversation, and your work ethic.

 In the workplace, you are expected to conduct yourself in a professional manner.  Professional is “exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace.”

 People form an opinion about you by the way you dress and your general appearance.  Some types of clothing are inappropriate for certain environments.

 If your language puts just one co-worker off, it’s probably a good idea to shape up.  While you may be protected by freedom of speech laws, that doesn’t make it okay to irritate those around you.  Even jokes you may think are innocent in nature can be taken as harassment.

CPS Lesson Question (3)

If you cannot find dress codes in writing, how should you figure out what the dress code is in a workplace? A.By looking at other employees B.Trial and error C.Both A and B are correct. D.None of the above are correct.

 In legal terms, sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual advance or conduct on the job that creates intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment.  In real life, sexually harassing behavior ranges from repeating offensive or belittling jokes, to a workplace full of offensive pornography, to an outright sexual assault.

 Being outspoken is a good thing, as long as you know when to draw the line and shut up.  However, being a loud mouth is not.  Having an opinion is a good thing, but being opinionated is not.

 Starting a new job can be very stressful.  It can be pretty overwhelming, but following these simple rules will help: 1. Listen and observe. 2. Beware of the office troublemaker. 3. Mind your manners.

CPS Lesson Question (4)

True and False: Having an opinion is a good thing, but being opinionated is not. A.True B.False

List the 2-3 most important things you learned in this lesson. Why are they important to you? (Use CPS “Pick a Student” for this question)
