1 National TB Infection Control Seminar S’celo S. Dlamini Director: Research, Information, Monitoring, Evaluation & Surveillance 12 th of August 2015 Integrating TB IC indicators in the NTPs’s monitoring, evaluation and reporting process

2 What we know about transmission… Transmission occurs at different levels: In congregate settings; In households; and Health care facilities Background

3 Who is affected… General population and Health care providers More so with high risk groups of the above… Including immuno-compromised individuals Background

4 Who has to do something about it… General population; Health care providers; Management in stakeholder settings Background

5 WHO recommendation… Infection control requires action at national and subnational levels to provide managerial direction, and at health facility level to implement TB infection control measures Background

6 What are they… Indicators simply put show us whether we are achieving our target SMART Indicators… You know what smart is… Types of indicators… Input, process, output and outcome Application of indicators… Direct and indirect measures Importance of Indicators

7 Facility Indicators… Often many as they measure both inputs, processes & outputs Sub-national Indicators… Not as many as facility… National Indicators… As few as possible - minimum Global Indicators… Much fewer… Levels of Indicators & quantity International National Sub-national Facility

8 Structural… More technical & specific Indicators specific to prevention… Use of PPEs etc… Indicators specific to control and management… Focus on measures to reduce further infections Indicators

9 TB client 5yrs & older screened @ health facilities 4 TB symptoms rate; TB client 5yrs & older initiated on treatment rate; TB Rif Resistant clients treatment initiation rate; TB new client success rate; TB client loss to follow up rate; TB client death rate; TB MDR client loss to follow up rate; TB MDR client death rate; TB MDR treatment success rate TB/HIV co-infected client on ART rate; % of inmates screened for TB annually % of mines providing routine TB screening # of community members in 6 Peri-mining districts screened for TB List of current Indicators

10 Previously the APP had : Number of Correctional Services Management areas with risk assessments undertaken Previous important Indicator

11 The purpose of this presentation is to facilitate the development of SMART indicators that will: Ensure compliance; Influence behavioural change; Enable innovations on IPCs; & Provide a pool of information to work from On reporting & data flow, the Department has an approved District Health Management Information System (DHMIS) Policy of 2011 – as well as accompanying SOPs for all levels. Proposal for integration of IC Indicators

12 We need to develop a list of indicators that we will include in the next reporting cycle – i.e. 2016/2017 financial year. What do we do in the meantime… What you need to do...
