3. A little about Malaysia ▪ Located in continent of Asia ▪ Language; Malay ▪ Capital; Kuala Lumpur ▪ Male population – 15, 793,782 (50.7%) ▪ Female population- 15,352,997 (49.3%)

4. Two areas of child labor ▪ Palm oil plantations ▪ Prostitution ▪ There is 3billion oil plantation workers Plantation in Malaysia

Child labor & ages 7-10 years old Climbing mountain Picking palm oil fruit 14-16 years old Picking up fruit off of ground De-seeding palm oil fruits 18+ Working with the machines Doing all of the jobs above ^ ▪ Gender, is both male and female ▪ 50,000 working at plantations across Malaysia Europe  Young children were particularly useful because of their small size and advantages to get in & out of small areas quickly  Mine shafts, chimney cleaners (boys) & fixing machines in power looms

Dangerous Risks Malaysia ▪ 75% of children suffer from injuries a year due to lack of protective equipment for risky work ▪ Heat & exhaustion ▪ Cuts and bruises from climbing up thorny mountains and hills ▪ No protective gear, even though they work with herbicide* which causes kidney & liver damage Europe ▪ Getting stuck in a chimney (boys) which would cause death ▪ Eased to pollution from coal burning and other industrial pollution ▪ The noise from under loom machines was sometimes deafening

7. What they do ( working wise ) Malaysia ▪ Carry large loads of heavy fruit, walk through fields of weeds. ▪ Spend hours every day bent over collecting fruit from the plantation floor ▪ Climbing up mountains, getting fruit in hot conditions Europe  Clean chimneys  Mine shafts, pull carts because of small size, sometimes pulling carts for 2 kilometers every trip  Machines, putting small hands in to pick out tangles & or threads

Wages Malaysia ▪ Don‘t actually get paid for two years. ▪ Can apply for loans from the company for ; health care & food supplement ▪ When they get paid they get USD5 or USD6 ( United states dollar) Europe ▪ Were forced to work long overtime shifts (may not have been payed for OT) many were beaten if they tried to say no to OT ▪ Any money spent on workers would cut into their profits ▪ Forced to take part of their wages in food ▪ Were not paid regular, and were paid very little for their hard work

9. Why are people working? Malaysia ▪ Take possession of visas, passports and work permits (adults mainly) ▪ ^ which makes it impossible for them to find another work other than in Malaysia without their papers ▪ Hide in plantations so they don‘t bet detained or deported Europe ▪ Poor families need every kid to work at the youngest possible age so that they can survive, wages were low so parents had to make ends meet ▪ The children had no other choice because education wasn't an option for them ▪ They produced some appalling conditions in which people were forced to work against their own will

10. What can we do to help end child labor? We will ne able to stop child labor if we no longer accept it, not in mines, not in agriculture, not in factories & not in the products we buy.
