EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

 The process of learning to recognize and express feelings.  Ability to establish a unique personal identity  Healthy emotional development helps a child become an adult who is self-confident, able to handle stress, and is empathetic to others

 What are some examples of emotions? Emotional Development: Infancy

 Emotions develop gradually, beginning in infancy  Range of emotions is limited at birth  Use crying to express pain or discomfort

 After about a month, babies begin to show delight by smiling

 After the 2 nd month, babies begin to have different cries  Parents will begin to understand what the different cries mean  Builds the bond between parents and child  Encourages expression of emotion

 Infants have a need for physical contact – need to be held and cuddled  Physical contact helps to build a bond between parents and baby  Creates “attachment”

 American psychologist, Harry Harlow, studied attachment issues in monkeys  Used substitute mothers to raise baby monkeys  Created one mother made of a soft cloth and another made of chicken wire  Baby monkeys preferred the “soft mother”, even if the other mother was the one providing food  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrNBEhzjg8I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrNBEhzjg8I  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsA5Sec6dAI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsA5Sec6dAI

 Temperament  A person’s unique nature on how they respond to different situations  9 different temperament traits have been identified by researchers ▪ Intensity ▪ Persistence ▪ Sensitivity ▪ Perceptiveness ▪ Adaptability  Parents and care givers have to realize that babies have their own temperaments Regularity Energy First Reaction Mood

 Most obvious sign of emotions is crying  Some cry more and harder than others  Crying is a call for attention or a need of something  That need may include being held or cuddled  Babies often learn to self sooth  May become attached to objects as well as people. Items may include a blanket, pacifier, or a specific toy or stuffed animal.  Self-soothing may also include thumb sucking

 Feelings and moods can be contagious from parents to their babies  Babies can sense emotions including sadness and nervousness  Can also sense happiness and comfort  Babies will adapt to the climate of the home
