The process of learning to recognize and express feelings. Ability to establish a unique personal identity Healthy emotional development helps a child become an adult who is self-confident, able to handle stress, and is empathetic to others

What are some examples of emotions? Emotional Development: Infancy

Emotions develop gradually, beginning in infancy Range of emotions is limited at birth Use crying to express pain or discomfort

After about a month, babies begin to show delight by smiling

After the 2 nd month, babies begin to have different cries Parents will begin to understand what the different cries mean Builds the bond between parents and child Encourages expression of emotion

Infants have a need for physical contact – need to be held and cuddled Physical contact helps to build a bond between parents and baby Creates “attachment”

Most obvious sign of emotions is crying Some cry more and harder than others Crying is a call for attention or a need of something That need may include being held or cuddled Babies often learn to self sooth May become attached to objects as well as people. Items may include a blanket, pacifier, or a specific toy or stuffed animal. Self-soothing may also include thumb sucking

Feelings and moods can be contagious from parents to their babies Babies can sense emotions including sadness and nervousness Can also sense happiness and comfort Babies will adapt to the climate of the home
