2 The Medieval Church Secular Clergy vs Regular Clergy Secular Clergy – (‘this present world’) Priests, bishops, pope… Regular Clergy – (‘rule’) Monks, nuns…

3 The Benedictine Rule A monk can own absolutely nothing. Everything a monk uses or wears belongs to the monastery. The abbot controls and distributes property. The monks totally obey the abbot.
