Important Notes The Crusades was a series of religious wars that lasted for over 200 years. Over these years, many Christians and Muslims fought over the Holy Lands. These conflicts were violent and caused much division between people. Although the Crusades were mostly seen as negative, there were some benefits from these years of conflicts.
7
Important Notes 2 These benefits included the trade of ideas, religion, culture, and goods. Many trade routes were opened from the Holy Land through Byzantium into Europe. Gold, spices, and silks were traded across these routes. A deeper understanding of religions happened through the years of the Crusades. Christians were able to understand the Muslim faith, while Muslims were able to understand the Christian faith. Also, a deeper understanding of cultures happened through the Crusades. Many were exposed to the cultures of the Middle East bringing back ideas to Europe.

Important Notes 3 One of the many ideas brought back from the Middle East during the Crusades was the use of Arabic numerals. Accountants, debt collectors, traders, and creditors found it easier to keep track of their information by writing 1,2,3,4… instead of using Roman numerals ( I II III IV….) Other ideas that were returned to Europe was ancient philosophical texts of Rome and Greece, that was lost during the Dark Ages. These text were preserved in Arabic and then translated back into Latin so that Europeans may read the texts again.
